Job Description The Opportunity Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University (ERAU) – Prescott Campus invites applications for a
Part-Time Temporary Research Technician in X-ray Astrophysics. This
position offers students who have completed their undergraduate
degree in physics or astrophysics the opportunity to gain
intensive, hands-on research experience in high-energy astrophysics
while contributing to cutting-edge studies of accreting neutron
stars. The appointee will join our Research Group and conduct a
focused research project involving X-ray spectral and timing
analysis using observations from leading space-based X-ray
missions, including NuSTAR, NICER, Chandra, and XRISM . The primary
scientific goal is to investigate how infalling material interacts
with a neutron star’s intense magnetic field. The precise research
direction will be developed collaboratively with PI. This position
provides strong preparation for graduate study or advanced research
careers in astrophysics. The tentative start date is September 1,
2026 and will last one year from start of appointment. Primary
Responsibilities Research and Data Analysis (Core Function) Perform
reduction, analysis, and interpretation of X-ray observations using
HEASoft and related software tools. Conduct X-ray spectral and
timing analysis of accreting neutron stars. Develop and utilize
Python-based analysis workflows and shell scripting tools. Ensure
high-quality, reproducible scientific results that directly support
ongoing funded research projects. Scholarly Contributions Conduct
comprehensive literature reviews to contextualize findings.
Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications,
conference presentations, and technical reports. Assist in
communicating research results to the broader scientific community.
Research Group Participation & Student Support Actively participate
in group meetings and collaborative discussions. Support
undergraduate student researchers in their projects as needed.
Contribute to maintaining research continuity and group
productivity. Professional Development & Outreach Travel to and
present research findings at professional conferences, workshops,
or collaborative meetings. Assist in strengthening and promoting
astrophysics research at ERAU. Develop clear, reusable
documentation on X-ray data analysis methods to support future
student researchers and enhance program sustainability.

Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Astrophysics (completed prior to
start date). Required Technical Skills: Proficiency in Python and
general coding. Familiarity with scientific data analysis. Basic
physics knowledge, particularly in classical mechanics,
electromagnetism, and introductory quantum concepts. Preferred
Qualifications: Experience with astronomical data analysis or
high-energy astrophysics. Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments
and shell scripting. Experience using HEASoft or other astronomical
software packages. Strong written and oral communication skills.
